That is, it features formally diverse, concept-heavy work, some of it socially engaged, thoroughly mediated by the critical rationale of the curators, in this case the Raqs Media Collective from India. Encompassing ninety-two individual artists and groups from forty countries, the show looks and sounds like any other serious world survey these days. Sixteen years and eight global roundups later, the current Shanghai Biennale (on view through March 12) seems, at first blush, to fulfill the welcoming drive of 2000. Curator Feng Boyi and artist Ai Weiwei’s now legendary “Fuck Off” exhibition caught the renegade spirit of those heady days and nights. This desire was even more evident in the half-dozen satellite shows put on by artist groups and independent curators in alternative venues around town. The exhibition thereby signaled the eagerness of many artists, dealers, and curators in the People’s Republic of China to embrace the US-and-Europe-dominated art system, after enduring the strictures of Mao’s Socialist Realism (1949–76) and the bleak struggles of progressive artists in the 1980s and ’90s. Fully contemporary and fully international for the first time, the millennial event, overseen by the globe-trotting Hou Hanru, included just enough academic and tradition-based material to placate Chinese officialdom, while placing its major emphasis on experimental work, which is what “contemporary art” means in China. IN 2000, the third Shanghai Biennale marked a turning point in East-West art relations. In addition to projects that are “in the works,” Buffalo Bayou Partnership works to maintain and activate Buffalo Bayou. This year’s Shanghai Biennale takes place amid China’s new money-fueled turn to Western art. Read More About the Buffalo Bayou East Plan In addition to extending the western network of parks, trails and open space, the plan connects the historic Fifth Ward and Greater East End neighborhoods to the bayou and to each other. Development of the plan comes after nearly two years of community engagement with residents throughout the area. Site-specific plans also have been completed for such areas as public art, lighting and conservation management.Ĭontinuing a legacy of transformative and award-winning green spaces, Buffalo Bayou Partnership (BBP) has created a Master Plan for the waterway’s East Sector (from US 59 to the Port of Houston Turning Basin). We are proud that our restoration and revitalization work has adhered to this plan’s overarching goals and planning concepts by balancing conservation and development and creating projects that serve multiple purposes-recreation, flood management and ecosystem restoration. Buffalo Bayou and Beyond, the organization’s visionary 20-year Master Plan, was issued in 2002 and calls for Buffalo Bayou to be a central, regional amenity. For over 30 years, Buffalo Bayou Partnership has been actively pursuing plans and programs for a 10-square mile stretch of Buffalo Bayou from Shepherd Drive to the Port of Houston Turning Basin.īelieving that the Millennium was the opportune time to dream and think BIG, Buffalo Bayou Partnership embarked on a historic planning effort with a nationally recognized consultant team led by Jane Thompson (Thompson Design Group-Boston), a leader in waterfront development throughout the world.
